We were doing some work on "The House of Blue Lights" today. I had originally recorded this tune in 2008 with Willie Pickens on piano, Marlene Rosenberg on bass, Robert Shy on drums and Jim Gailoreto on sax during our "Born to Be Blue" sessions, but it rocked out a little too much for that jazzy album, so I had been saving it.
I was going to record more tunes with my long time friend and pianist Willie this Spring, but sadly he unexpectedly passed away a few months ago. I worked and studied with Willie for the past 25 years, and we made several albums together, and so I am releasing this tune now, with three others, in honor of my longtime mentor and friend. They will be available as soon as we finish mixing them and the proceeds of the sales will go to a jazz education charity because Willie was a music and jazz educator here in Chicago.
"The House of Blue Lights" was recorded by Swing, Boogie Woogie, Western Swing and Rock bands throughout the 40's through today... and Willie plays an awesome left hand on it!
