Drum Lower Mill

Drum Lower Mill
The picture above is taken automatically from, if there is something related to the picture please visit and contact
The mill by the lowest tramway at Drum Quarry. A fascinating place with many levels and an untopped sinc. Some elegant tip runs, too. Sadly, all the underground workings have collapsed, but the quarry is in a beautiful location, well worth a wander.
Opened in 1860 the quarry probably closed in the late 1880's... a lot of work for twenty years. Behind this mill are the remains of an incline going up to the quarry pit. On the left is a waterwheel pit with the tailrace presumably running under the road/tramway.

That picture has a wonderful mood, Iain. The perspective up the hill with the ruins in the foreground and the mountains in the background with the dark clouds is impressive! Great work!

[] Thanks very much, Dirk- that's very kind of you, glad you like it!
Teigl 2017-04-07 10:03:07
The rocky ridge in the background seems to say, "don't stop here, there is more over yonder". It makes me wonder what is beyond that ridge. A beautiful image Iain. There is always so much to contemplate.
patrog5 2017-04-07 10:21:46
Really very beautiful

Superb image Iain, I agree with Dirk your choice of a low perspective is excellent. I really like those foreground lichen covered lumps of slate.
Alan Hughes Mach 2017-04-07 11:03:34
Perfection as always! Those rocks in the foreground with the abandoned slate are my stars in this shot Ian. They are just wonderful. The rest is just a joy to explore and admire.
Coisroux 2017-04-07 11:56:14
Super job Iain.

The colours!!! The textures!!! I agree with Francois...your depiction of these old ruins is mastery ;)
KarlPhoto365 2017-04-07 16:54:44
Just my kind of image; would love to see a black and white version ?
Mairi M Martin 2017-04-07 17:03:09
Very atmospheric and I love the fact that there is also some background info with each image.
GizzieFleury 2017-04-07 17:33:35
An amazing site. As you say, a lot of work....
myfyrtomos 2017-04-07 18:55:05
Great picture! I very often wonder at the stamina of the Victorians. As you say, a heck of a lot of work, though they were unlikely to imagine there would only be twenty years life for the quarry.
Collywobble1 2017-04-07 21:07:04
A lesson in composition, Iain as usual everything in its right place, just beautiful. For some reason I get the feeling the is quite a friendly place (if that's possible). Some ruins seem dark and forbidding and this just doesn't, despite the moody sky. ☺️
Andy__Thorpe 2017-04-08 01:49:33
Congratulations on Explore Iain, well deserved. :-) I don't know how you manage to pull off such fabulous foregrounds every single picture, but you've done it again. This one sets the stage, if you will, with its slate fragments and discarded pieces. Then on the main stage you have the lovely ruins with their wonderful workmanship and interesting shapes. Finally, the backdrop of rugged slope with its outcropping of rock. The three steps form such a beautiful picture and a story of sorts, Love it. :-)

[] Diolch yn fawr Alan, I was as fascinated with the rocks as anything, so I'm really pleased that you liked them.

[] Thank you so much, Francois, I really appreciate that...I had taken a shot about 8 years ago with a cheap p&s and had wanted to do it again for took me a long time despite this being on my doorstep :-D

Teigl 2017-04-08 07:48:04
[] Thanks very much, yes, the untopping was later but it does seem to have been done in the '80s...hard to imagine this is only 20 years...I am doing more research....
Teigl 2017-04-08 07:49:25
[] You are right...not exactly friendly, but certainly not forbidding either...I always get a feeling of isolation here, but in a good way, it's a secret place where few go...and it's full of the evidence of iron age and dark age settlements. Thanks very much, mate :-)
Teigl 2017-04-08 07:51:22
[] Thanks so much, Jessie :-) My daughter was with me taking photos as well and I suspect she did a better job, but since she shoots film, we'll have to wait. I am so glad you liked this comp, I took the same years ago on a cheap camera and had been thinking about it for a long here it is at last! I'm really glad you liked the foreground, I was kinda fascinated with that. As for the Explore, who knew? Very surprising...thank you so much pal :-)

How interesting to have a comparison of your shot with one taken by film. I suspect that yours will be just as good, digital has come such a long way and the image quality of your shots is just great along with the interesting and effective compositions. Congratulations on Explore.
